What kind of starting salary would a quant have at a bank/hedge fund/investment firm?
I will have a Master of Science in Econ w/ a concentration in Quantitative Finance. I am proficient in several mathematical/statistical modeling software programs and programming languages(Visual Basic, macros, C++)
Does internship experience count?
That is an extremely broad brush — the best (best schools, best programs, best grades, best connections) working for the biggest firms in the NYC & surrounding area, London, and a few other major cities used to start in the high 100’s, let’s call it $180k. I would bet it is considerably less now, but still 6 figures.
At the other end, you are a basic number cruncher or programmer — $50k…ish depending on experience.
Important qualifier: Unless you get modeling, teaching, or research work in school, there are relatively few fields were it pays to get a masters without relevant experience at he bachelor’s level first. You end up over qualified (education) and under qualified (experience) for almost everything. That might be workable in a boom economy, but it’s heck in a bust.
